Toisiolähettimet

Toisiolähettimet, known in English as transponders, are electronic devices that emit a predetermined response when they receive a specific radio or radar signal. The term is a portmanteau of "transmitter" and "responder." Essentially, a toisiolähetin acts as an automated signal relay. When interrogated by a signal from a radar or other interrogation source, it transmits back a unique coded signal. This coded signal allows the interrogator to identify and track the toisiolähetin, and by extension, the object or platform it is attached to.

The primary function of toisiolähettimet is to enhance the detectability and identification of aircraft, ships, and other vehicles. They are crucial components of air traffic control systems, maritime surveillance, and military identification friend or foe (IFF) systems. In aviation, for instance, aircraft are equipped with toisiolähettimet that transmit information such as their altitude, airspeed, and a unique identification code to ground-based radar stations. This information is vital for controllers to manage airspace safely and efficiently.

The signals transmitted by toisiolähettimet can vary in complexity. Simple toisiolähettimet might only transmit a static identification code. More advanced systems, like Mode S in aviation, can transmit a greater range of data and even facilitate direct communication between aircraft and ground stations.
