Toetsvaliditeit refers to the extent to which a test measures what it is intended to measure. It is a crucial concept in psychometrics and educational assessment, ensuring that test scores accurately reflect the underlying construct or skill being evaluated. A valid test provides meaningful and interpretable results.

There are several types of validity that are considered. Content validity is concerned with whether the test items adequately represent the domain or subject matter being assessed. Criterion-related validity assesses how well a test score predicts future performance or correlates with existing measures. This can be further divided into predictive validity, which forecasts future outcomes, and concurrent validity, which relates to current performance. Construct validity examines whether the test measures the theoretical construct it is designed to measure, often through examining correlations with other related measures.

A test can be reliable without being valid, but a valid test must also be reliable. Reliability refers to the consistency of test scores over time or across different administrations. For example, a scale that consistently shows a person's weight as 10 pounds heavier than it actually is would be reliable but not valid. Conversely, a test that produces wildly different scores for the same individual under similar conditions, even if it happened to hit the true score once, would lack reliability and therefore also validity. Establishing and maintaining the validity of a test is an ongoing process that involves careful test design, item analysis, and validation studies.
