Todetaan

Todetaan is the present passive form of the Finnish verb todeta, meaning "to state" or "to ascertain." It is used to report information in a neutral, objective way and is common in academic writing, journalism, and official documents when a finding or conclusion is presented without naming a specific agent.

In Finnish, the present passive form todetaan has no expressed subject and refers to a statement in a general sense. The corresponding past passive is todettiin, and the perfect passive is on todettu (“has been stated”). The participle todettu can function as an attributive adjective, as in todettu virhe (“a reported error”). Todetaan is frequently followed by clauses beginning with että, as in: Tutkimuksessa todetaan, että ilmastonmuutos on vaikuttanut monin tavoin.

Etymologically, todeta is related to the Finnish concept of truth and to words such as totuus (truth). The verb’s primary function in usage is to present findings or conclusions in a way that emphasizes the statement’s content rather than the actor responsible for it. In practice, todetaan helps maintain objectivity in reporting and analysis, particularly in formal and scientific Finnish.
