Tilavuuspitoisuudet, often translated as volume concentrations or volume fractions, are a way of expressing the relative amount of a component within a mixture or solution based on its volume. It is a dimensionless quantity, typically represented as a ratio or a percentage. For a component A in a mixture of components A and B, the volume concentration can be calculated as the volume of A divided by the total volume of the mixture. This is often expressed as v/v or % v/v.

For example, if you mix 10 milliliters of ethanol with 90 milliliters of water, the total volume of the mixture is 100 milliliters (assuming ideal mixing, which isn't always the case). The volume concentration of ethanol would then be 10 ml / 100 ml = 0.1, or 10% v/v. This concept is widely used in chemistry, pharmacology, and various industrial applications to define the composition of solutions and mixtures. It is important to note that volume concentrations can sometimes be temperature-dependent, as the volume of substances can change with temperature. When precise measurements are critical, it is often necessary to specify the temperature at which the volume concentration was determined.
