TiVos

TiVos are a family of digital video recorders and related devices marketed under the TiVo brand. The first TiVo devices were released in 1999 by TiVo, Inc. and helped popularize time shifting, on-screen program guides, and automated recording. Core features include a graphical interface, a programmable Season Pass system that records all episodes of a show, and a WishList search that records programs matching keywords or actors. The devices typically operate with a live TV signal and allow users to pause, rewind, and resume viewing.

Hardware and storage evolved from single-device DVRs with internal hard drives to higher-capacity units and companion clients. Early models supported over-the-air or cable inputs with CableCARD tuners; later models added HDMI outputs, 4K video, and streaming integration. A remote and the TiVo user interface provide search across live TV, downloaded content, and certain streaming apps, with recommendations based on viewing history.

Product lines have included TiVo Edge (4K DVR for OTA and/or cable configurations), TiVo Bolt and Roamio (compact and mid-range DVRs), TiVo Mini (low-cost companion box), and TiVo Stream 4K (streaming device with TiVo software). Some models emphasize standalone DVR functionality, while others combine streaming apps with local recording. Service plans have historically required a guide data subscription, with optional lifetime access on some devices.

Ownership and branding have changed through corporate acquisitions. As of the 2020s, the TiVo brand is associated with Xperi, which licenses TiVo technology and data for devices and services in collaboration with partners.
