Thunderbirds

Thunderbirds is a British science fiction television series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, produced by AP Films for ITC Entertainment. Filmed using their signature Supermarionation technique, it combines marionette puppets with scale-model special effects to depict high-stakes rescue missions. The show aired on ITV in 1965–66 and was later shown in the United States on CBS, totaling 32 episodes across two series.

Set in the 2060s, it follows International Rescue, a philanthropic organization led by former astronaut Jeff Tracy and his five adult sons—Scott, Virgil, Gordon, John, and Alan—who operate a fleet of rescue vehicles and support craft. The principal vehicles are Thunderbird 1–5, each with distinct roles: Thunderbird 1 is a fast reconnaissance rocket; Thunderbird 2 is a heavy transporter that carries other support pods; Thunderbird 3 is a space rescue craft; Thunderbird 4 is a submarine capable of deep-sea operations; and Thunderbird 5 is a mobile orbital platform. Supporting characters include Lady Penelope and her chauffeur Parker, who provide intelligence and international connections for the organization.

The series is notable for its distinctive visual style, early use of miniatures and puppetry, and Barry Gray's theme music. Its stories emphasize engineering ingenuity, teamwork, and humanitarian aims as the International Rescue team responds to natural disasters, accidents, and other emergencies around the world.

Thunderbirds became a landmark of British popular culture and influenced later science fiction television and model-making communities. It spawned a feature film in 1966 compiled from episodes and inspired ongoing revivals and collaborations in subsequent decades.
