Thresholdylittäjien is a term used in Finnish folklore to describe a class of mythical entities believed to inhabit the liminal spaces between realms. The word combines the Finnish words “threshold” (kynnys) and “ylittäjä” (crossing or passer), denoting beings that are thought to move through thresholds—physical, spiritual, or temporal. In traditional stories, thresholdylittäjien are portrayed as unseen guardians or intermediaries that prevent foreign spirits from entering the human world, yet allow wounded souls to pass on to the afterlife.

Descriptions of thresholdylittäjien vary across regions. In some accounts, they appear as translucent figures cloaked in twilight, visible only when someone is passing a literal door or gate. Elsewhere they are described as animal-like, sometimes resembling deer or foxes, which accompany travelers on night journeys. Folkloric literature suggests that encountering a thresholdylittäjä is considered a favorable omen, signifying protection and safe passage. Conversely, people who attempt to ignore or disturb thresholdylittäjien are warned of misfortune, as their proximity may disrupt the protective barrier they maintain.

Academic study of thresholdylittäjien is limited; most references are found in works on Germanic and Finno-Ugric myths and in regional ethnographic collections. The concept contributes to a broader understanding of how liminality is conceptualized in Northern European oral traditions.
