Thirumurai

Thirumurai is a canonical collection of Tamil devotional hymns composed by the Nayanars, a group of mystics and saints, in the Tamil tradition of Shaivism. The word "Thirumurai" translates to "sacred division" or "holy text." This compilation is divided into twelve volumes, each representing the works of different Nayanars, and is considered the foundational scripture of Tamil Shaivism.

The hymns within the Thirumurai express deep love and devotion to Lord Shiva. They cover a wide range of themes including philosophical insights, theological doctrines, moral teachings, and descriptions of Shiva's various forms and deeds. The devotional poetry is characterized by its lyrical beauty, emotional intensity, and profound spiritual content.

The most prominent Nayanars whose works are included are Appar, Sambandar, and Sundarar, whose hymns form the first seven Thirumurais, often referred to as the "Tevaram." Manikkavacakar's Tiruvacagam and Tirukkovaiyar constitute the eighth Thirumurai. The ninth Thirumurai is by Tirumular, known as Tirumantiram. The tenth Thirumurai contains the works of various saints, including Karaikkal Ammaiyar. The eleventh Thirumurai is by Chedayanar and Markkandeyar. Finally, the twelfth Thirumurai is the Periya Puranam by Sekkizhar, which narrates the lives of the Nayanars.

The Thirumurai has been central to the practice of Shaivism in Tamil Nadu for centuries, influencing its music, dance, temple rituals, and philosophical discourse. It continues to be recited and sung in temples and homes, inspiring spiritual devotion among followers.
