Thermoregulation is the biological process that allows an organism to maintain its core internal temperature within a narrow, optimal range, regardless of external environmental conditions. This is a vital aspect of homeostasis, ensuring that physiological functions, such as enzyme activity and metabolic processes, can operate efficiently. Organisms employ a variety of strategies to achieve thermoregulation, which can be broadly categorized into endothermy and ectothermy.

Endotherms, commonly referred to as "warm-blooded" animals, generate their own internal heat through metabolic processes. This heat is then regulated to maintain a stable body temperature. Mechanisms include shivering, which increases metabolic rate and heat production, and changes in blood flow to the skin, such as vasodilation to release heat or vasoconstriction to conserve it. Birds and mammals are primarily endothermic.

Ectotherms, often called "cold-blooded" animals, rely on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature. They absorb heat from their environment, for example, by basking in the sun. Conversely, they can move to cooler areas or seek shade to avoid overheating. Behavioral adaptations play a significant role in ectotherm thermoregulation. Reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates are largely ectothermic. Disruptions to thermoregulation can lead to hypothermia (dangerously low body temperature) or hyperthermia (dangerously high body temperature), both of which can be detrimental or fatal.
