Thengalai

Thengalai is a prominent sect within the Tamil Vaishnavism tradition, primarily associated with the Sri Vaishnava community. The term "Thengalai" translates to "the followers of the southern (region)" and is one of the two main divisions of Sri Vaishnavism, the other being the Vadakalai. The Thengalai sect primarily emphasizes strict adherence to scriptural authority, traditional rituals, and Tamil vernacular scriptures.

Historically, the Thengalai sect traces its origins to the philosophic teachings of Ramanuja (11th century), a revered theologian and philosopher who propagated Vishishtadvaita Vedanta. However, Thengalais are distinguished from their Vadakalai counterparts through differences in theological interpretations, religious practices, and emphasis on certain scriptures. Thengalais place a significant emphasis on the Tamil Divya Prabandham, particularly the works of the Alvars, for devotional practice and religious education.

The sect follows specific temple traditions and ritual practices, often characterized by a conservative approach to liturgical customs. Their religious leaders and scholars have historically played a key role in preserving Tamil devotional literature and promoting veneration of Vishnu and his avatars.
