TheGrunnopplæringen is a term in Norwegian education referring to the compulsory basic education for children. It encompasses the first ten years of schooling, typically starting at age six. This period is divided into two main stages: barneskolen, which covers grades 1-7, and ungdomsskolen, which covers grades 8-10. The primary aim of grunnopplæringen is to provide all students with a foundational set of knowledge and skills, fostering their personal development and preparing them for further education or vocational training.

The curriculum is standardized across the country and includes subjects such as Norwegian language, mathematics, English, social studies, science, physical education, art, music, and home economics. Emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and social competencies. Assessment methods vary, with a combination of continuous evaluation and formal testing. While the core curriculum is national, individual schools and municipalities have some autonomy in their implementation and organization. The completion of grunnopplæringen is a prerequisite for entry into videregående opplæring, which is the upper secondary education level in Norway.
