Th2associated

Th2associated is a term used in immunology to describe a set of immune responses that are characteristic of T helper 2 (Th2) cells. Th2 cells are a subset of CD4+ T lymphocytes that play a crucial role in orchestrating adaptive immune responses, particularly against extracellular pathogens like helminths (parasitic worms) and in the development of allergic reactions.

The key mediators released by Th2 cells, known as cytokines, include interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-5 (IL-5), and interleukin-13 (IL-13). IL-4 is pivotal for B cell class switching to produce IgE antibodies, which are central to allergic responses. It also promotes the differentiation of naive T cells into more Th2 cells, creating a positive feedback loop. IL-5 is essential for the development, activation, and recruitment of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell that combats helminth infections and contributes to allergic inflammation. IL-13 shares some functions with IL-4 and contributes to mucus production, smooth muscle contraction, and airway hyperresponsiveness seen in asthma.

A Th2-associated immune response is typically characterized by elevated levels of IgE antibodies, increased eosinophil counts, and pronounced mast cell and basophil activation. While crucial for defense against certain parasites, dysregulation of Th2 responses can lead to the development or exacerbation of allergic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. Understanding Th2-associated immune mechanisms is vital for diagnosing and developing therapeutic strategies for these conditions.
