Tetrahydroprogesterone

Tetrahydroprogesterone, also known as THP, is a naturally occurring neurosteroid and a metabolite of progesterone. It is synthesized in the brain and other tissues from progesterone through the action of enzymes such as 5α-reductase and 3α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. THP is classified as a positive allosteric modulator of gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA A) receptors. This means that it binds to a site on the GABA A receptor distinct from the GABA binding site, enhancing the inhibitory effects of GABA.

The presence of THP in the central nervous system suggests a role in regulating neuronal excitability. Research has indicated that THP may be involved in various physiological processes, including anxiety, sedation, sleep, and mood regulation. Its anxiolytic and sedative properties are attributed to its modulation of GABAergic neurotransmission.
