Tervuren

Tervuren is a municipality located in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium. It is situated in the Flemish Region and is part of the Brussels-Capital Region's periphery. The municipality comprises the villages of Tervuren, Duisburg, Moorsel, and Overijse. Tervuren is known for its historical significance, particularly its association with the Belgian royal family and the former royal hunting grounds of the Sonian Forest.

The history of Tervuren dates back to Roman times, but it gained prominence in the Middle Ages as a ducal residence. The Dukes of Brabant established a castle and court in Tervuren, which became a center of power. During the Spanish and Austrian periods, the area continued to be favored by nobility. In the late 19th century, King Leopold II developed Tervuren into a royal domain, constructing the Royal Museum for Central Africa (AfricaMuseum) and the Royal Palace.

The AfricaMuseum, a prominent landmark, showcases art, culture, and natural history related to the Congo, a former Belgian colony. The extensive Sonian Forest, adjacent to Tervuren, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers recreational opportunities. The Royal Saint Hubertus Church, also commissioned by Leopold II, is another notable architectural feature. Tervuren's administrative center is located in the former Royal Palace.

Today, Tervuren is a residential municipality with a significant portion of its area covered by forest. It maintains a strong connection to its royal past while serving as a peaceful residential area for those working in Brussels.
