Tervemet

Tervemet is a term used in materials science and electromagnetics to describe a class of tunable metamaterials designed to dynamically control the propagation of electromagnetic waves, particularly in the terahertz to microwave frequency ranges. The name is a modern coinage used in some academic discussions to categorize variable-response metamaterials.

Definition and concept

A tervemet consists of periodic unit cells whose effective electromagnetic properties, such as permittivity and permeability, can be modified in real time by external stimuli. Common approaches include microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) actuation, phase-change materials, or adjustable resonant elements. By changing geometry, material state, or coupling between elements, tervemets can shift resonant frequencies, alter bandwidth, or adjust absorption and transmission.
