Ternaryjärjestelmät, or ternary systems, are number systems that use three distinct symbols to represent numbers. Most commonly, these symbols are 0, 1, and 2. This is in contrast to the decimal system, which is the most common system used today and employs ten symbols (0 through 9). In a ternary system, the value of a digit is determined by its position, multiplied by a power of the base, which is 3.

For example, the ternary number 120 would be equivalent to (1 * 3^2) + (2 * 3^1) + (0 * 3^0) in the decimal system. This calculates to (1 * 9) + (2 * 3) + (0 * 1) = 9 + 6 + 0 = 15. Thus, the ternary number 120 is equal to the decimal number 15.

Ternary systems, particularly balanced ternary systems where the digits can be -1, 0, and 1, have been explored for computational purposes. Balanced ternary offers some advantages in certain arithmetic operations and can simplify logic circuits in some cases. While not as widespread as binary (base-2) or decimal (base-10) systems, ternary principles are a fundamental concept in understanding different numeral systems and their potential applications. The choice of base significantly impacts how numbers are represented and manipulated.
