The BF-BOF method involves smelting iron ore in a blast furnace to produce pig iron, which is then refined in a basic oxygen furnace to remove impurities and achieve the desired steel composition. The EAF route, on the other hand, utilizes recycled steel scrap as its primary input, melting it down in an electric arc furnace. This method is often considered more environmentally friendly due to its reliance on recycled materials.

Regardless of the method, the molten steel undergoes further processing, including the addition of alloying elements to impart specific properties such as strength, hardness, or corrosion resistance. Subsequent stages involve casting the steel into various shapes, such as slabs, blooms, or billets, which are then further processed through rolling, forging, or drawing to create the final products. Continuous technological advancements aim to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and enhance the quality and performance of steel products.
