Telomerebeskyttelse refers to the biological mechanisms that protect telomeres from shortening or degradation. Telomeres are specialized protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that play a crucial role in cellular aging and stability. Each time a cell divides, a small portion of the telomere is lost. This progressive shortening can eventually lead to cellular senescence, a state where cells stop dividing, or apoptosis, programmed cell death.

The primary mechanism for telomere maintenance is the enzyme telomerase. Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein reverse transcriptase that can add repetitive nucleotide sequences to the ends of telomeres, counteracting the shortening that occurs during DNA replication. In humans, telomerase activity is high in germ cells, stem cells, and cancer cells, allowing these cells to divide extensively. In contrast, most somatic cells have very low or undetectable telomerase activity, leading to telomere shortening over time.
