Televisiojakelu refers to the methods and systems used to transmit television programming to viewers. Historically, the primary form of television distribution was terrestrial broadcasting, where signals were sent from a central transmitter to antennas on individual homes. This method required a clear line of sight to the transmitter and was limited by geography and signal interference.

In the latter half of the 20th century, cable television emerged as a significant alternative. Cable systems use coaxial or fiber optic cables to deliver television signals directly to subscribers' homes. This allowed for a greater number of channels and a more reliable signal, less susceptible to atmospheric conditions.

Satellite television became widespread in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This method involves transmitting signals from a ground station to a satellite in orbit, which then relays the signal back down to a satellite dish owned by the viewer. Satellite distribution is particularly effective in areas where laying cable is difficult or impossible.

More recently, internet protocol television (IPTV) and over-the-top (OTT) streaming services have revolutionized television distribution. IPTV utilizes the internet to deliver live and on-demand television content over a managed network, often by a service provider. OTT services, such as Netflix and YouTube, deliver content directly to viewers over the public internet, bypassing traditional broadcasters and cable companies entirely. These modern methods offer flexibility, a vast selection of content, and the ability to watch on various devices. Each distribution method has its own technical requirements, cost structures, and advantages for different user needs.
