Tekstuurilaskenta, also known as texture analysis or texture computation, refers to the process of extracting meaningful information from images that describes the spatial arrangement of pixel intensities. Instead of focusing on individual pixel values, texture analysis aims to characterize the patterns, relationships, and structures within a region of an image. This information can reveal properties like smoothness, roughness, regularity, or randomness.

The core idea behind tekstuurilaskenta is to quantify the "texture" of an image. This is achieved by employing various mathematical and statistical methods. Common approaches include statistical methods that analyze the distribution of pixel values and their neighbors, such as gray-level co-occurrence matrices (GLCMs). These matrices capture how often different gray-level pairs occur at specific spatial distances and orientations.
