Tehtäväaika

Tehtäväaika is a Finnish term referring to the duration of a job assignment or appointment. It describes a period during which a person is employed to perform a defined task, project, or role, after which the employment or appointment ends unless renewed or converted to another form.

In employment practice, tehtäväaika is used for fixed-term or temporary positions. It covers roles created to meet a temporary need, such as substituting for a colleague, undertaking a specific project, or carrying out research funded by a grant. The end date or the completion of the task is usually stated in the employment contract or appointment document. The concept is also used in the public sector and academia for appointments or posts tied to a project, funding period, or term of office.

Rights and obligations during tehtäväaika generally follow relevant labor laws and collective agreements. The employee is entitled to the same core rights as other employees for the duration of the period, including pay, holidays, and protections. When the tehtäväaika ends, the contract terminates unless there is a renewal or conversion to a permanent or open-ended arrangement. Repeated renewals or extensions can be used, but such practice is typically subject to legal limits or policy guidelines to avoid abuse.
