Tavira

Tavira is a town and municipality in the eastern Algarve region of Portugal, within the Faro District. It lies along the Gilão River and is close to the Atlantic coast and the Tavira Island, which is connected to the mainland by bridges and ferry services. The surrounding area is part of the Ria Formosa, a coastal lagoon system and protected natural park that hosts diverse birdlife and habitats.

Historically, Tavira has roots dating back to prehistoric times and developed under successive Roman and Moorish influences before becoming a Portuguese town. The historic center is centered on a hill crowned by the castle, with the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo and the Igreja da Misericórdia among its notable landmarks. The Municipal Museum, housed in a former convent, preserves local art and archaeology. The town’s architecture features whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and traditional tiles that reflect its heritage.

Economy and tourism play major roles, with draws including the well-preserved historic core, the beaches of Tavira Island, and the natural beauty of the Ria Formosa. Fishing and agriculture, particularly citrus cultivation, remain important local activities alongside tourism.
