Tautograms

A tautogram is a text in which all words begin with the same letter. This stylistic constraint can be found in various forms of writing, from poetry and prose to word games and exercises. Creating a coherent and meaningful tautogram requires careful word selection and often a degree of creativity to overcome the inherent limitations.

The origin of the term tautogram is uncertain, but it likely derives from the Greek words "tauto" meaning "same" and "gramma" meaning "letter." Tautograms are a form of alliteration, which is the repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of words in a phrase or sentence. While alliteration is a common literary device, tautograms take this principle to its extreme by applying it to every word.

Examples of tautograms can range from simple, playful sentences to more complex and lengthy passages. For instance, "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers" is a well-known example that, while not a perfect tautogram (due to "a"), demonstrates the concept. More elaborate tautograms can be found in literary works or as linguistic challenges. Authors and word enthusiasts sometimes use tautograms to showcase their vocabulary and linguistic dexterity. The challenge lies in maintaining grammatical correctness and logical sense while adhering to the strict rule of using words that all start with the same letter.
