Tasalämpöisten, often translated as warm-blooded, is a term used in biology to describe animals that can maintain a stable internal body temperature regardless of their external environment. This internal regulation is a key characteristic that distinguishes them from cold-blooded, or ectothermic, animals whose body temperature fluctuates with the surroundings.

The ability to maintain a consistent internal temperature allows warm-blooded animals to remain active in a wider range of environmental conditions. This physiological advantage has enabled their successful adaptation to diverse habitats across the globe. Birds and mammals are the primary examples of warm-blooded animals. They achieve thermoregulation through various mechanisms. Metabolic heat production, generated by cellular processes, plays a significant role. Additionally, they employ behavioral strategies such as seeking shade or basking in the sun, and physiological adaptations like shivering to generate heat or sweating and panting to dissipate it.

This internal heat generation requires a substantial energy intake, meaning warm-blooded animals typically need to consume more food than similarly sized cold-blooded creatures. The evolutionary development of endothermy, the biological process of generating internal heat, has been a crucial factor in the diversification and success of avian and mammalian lineages.
