Tarsuslater is a fictional city-state created for world-building and speculative fiction. It is imagined as a coastal hub in the eastern Mediterranean, bridging inland Anatolia and maritime trade routes, with a tradition of mercantile culture and civic republicanism.

Tarsuslater lies on a delta formed by the fictional Tarsus River, near the shores of a Mediterranean coastline. The city experiences a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and dry summers conducive to outdoor markets. The urban core centers on a crescent harbor ringed with arcades, while limestone hills and terraced gardens rise inland.

Founded in the early centuries of the common era by merchant clans, Tarsuslater grew as a mercantile republic trading olive oil, wine, textiles, and pottery. It enjoyed a cultural and economic golden age under a consortium of navigators and guilds, before facing periodic invasions and political reforms that shaped its constitutional traditions. In the contemporary fiction setting, the city contends with modernization while preserving traditional crafts.

The government combines elements of republican governance and guild influence. It is headed by a Council of Merchants elected to yearlong terms, assisted by magistrates who oversee trade, justice, and public works. The legal system blends commercial jurisprudence with customary law, and citizenship is tied to guild membership and public service.

The economy rests on port traffic, warehousing, amphora production, textile workshops, and provisioning for seafaring fleets. Culturally, Tarsuslater reflects Greek, Aramaic, and Anatolian influences, evident in bilingual inscriptions, festivals, and harbor lore. Urban design favors arcaded promenades, cisterns, and public baths that serve both merchants and residents.

Notable features include the Lantern Market, a ceremonial quay, and the Library of Lentos, renowned for maritime charts. The City Gate of Keram preserves the city’s early republican heritage.
