Tariffbundne

Tariffbundne is a term used in some Scandinavian languages to describe workers, employers, or workplaces that are bound by a tariff agreement, i.e., a collective bargaining agreement that sets wages and other terms of employment for an industry or company. The concept refers to the status created when a tariff agreement applies to participants in a sector, whether through direct coverage or through extensions that broaden the agreement’s reach.

Tariff agreements are negotiated between trade unions and employer associations. In many jurisdictions, authorities may extend the terms of a tariff agreement to cover all employers in a sector, even those not signatory to the agreement. When this extension occurs, firms become tariffbundne and must follow the agreement’s wage scales, working hours, overtime rules, vacation entitlements, and other employment conditions.

The scope of tariffbundne varies by country and sector. In practice, it commonly affects a wide portion of the economy in regions where collective bargaining is centralized. The binding nature of tariff agreements aims to create predictable labor costs, reduce pay disparities, and provide standardized working terms, while also potentially limiting managerial flexibility and workplace experimentation.
