Tappdensitet

Tappdensitet, often translated as "density loss" or "permeance," is a concept related to the passage of substances through a material. It quantifies how easily something, typically a fluid like water vapor or air, can move through a barrier. High tappdensitet indicates a material that readily allows passage, while low tappdensitet suggests a material that significantly impedes or prevents passage.

In construction and building science, tappdensitet is particularly relevant when discussing the performance of insulation materials, vapor barriers, and membranes. For example, a vapor barrier with low tappdensitet is designed to prevent moisture from migrating through walls and ceilings, which is crucial for preventing condensation and mold growth. Conversely, some materials are designed for specific levels of breathability, allowing some vapor to escape while still offering resistance to bulk water.

The measurement of tappdensitet can vary depending on the substance being considered and the specific testing methods employed. For water vapor, it might be expressed in terms of perm-inches or perms. For air, it could relate to air leakage rates.
