Tampoan

Tampoan refers to a ritualistic practice originating from the indigenous Tagbanua people of Palawan, Philippines. It is a form of reconciliation or appeasement ceremony performed to resolve disputes and restore harmony within the community and with the spirit world. The ceremony is typically conducted when someone has transgressed a taboo or caused harm, either intentionally or unintentionally.

The core of the Tampoan involves offerings and prayers addressed to ancestral spirits and deities. These offerings often include food, betel nuts, and other symbolic items. A shaman or spiritual leader, known as a 'babaylan' or 'katalonan' in some Tagbanua subgroups, presides over the ceremony, acting as an intermediary between the community and the spiritual realm.

Through chanting, dancing, and invoking the spirits, the babaylan seeks forgiveness for the transgressor and asks for the spirits' blessings to mend broken relationships and prevent further misfortune. The ceremony culminates in a communal feast, signifying the restoration of unity and peace.
