Talcher

Talcher is a town and municipality in Angul district, Odisha, India. It lies on the eastern bank of the Brahmani River and serves as the administrative headquarters of the Talcher subdivision. The town forms an important industrial hub in northern Odisha, driven largely by coal mining and power generation.

The Talcher coalfield, operated as part of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), comprises multiple mines and supplies coal to regional industries. Adjacent to the coalfield is the Talcher Thermal Power Station, a large coal-fired plant operated by NTPC, which has been a major source of electricity for the state and the region. The convergence of coal and power facilities has shaped local employment, transport links, and urban development, while also attracting environmental and social challenges typical of mining districts.

Talcher is connected by road to other towns in Odisha, and the wider Angul region is accessible by rail via nearby stations. The town's economy, education institutions, markets, and cultural life reflect Odia traditions and the influences of industrial growth.
