Takebackohjelmat, or take-back programs, are systems designed for the collection and recycling or responsible disposal of end-of-life products. These programs are often initiated by manufacturers, retailers, or governments to address environmental concerns related to waste generation and the recovery of valuable materials. They aim to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and to prevent hazardous substances from entering the environment.

The scope of take-back programs varies widely. Common examples include electronics (e-waste), batteries, pharmaceuticals, packaging materials, and clothing. For electronics, programs often focus on recovering metals and reducing the impact of toxic components. Battery take-back schemes ensure that heavy metals are not leached into the soil. Pharmaceutical take-back initiatives prevent the misuse of medications and their improper disposal down drains, which can contaminate water sources.

Participation in take-back programs can be voluntary or mandated by legislation. In many regions, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws place the burden of managing product end-of-life on the producers themselves, often necessitating the implementation of take-back systems. Consumers can typically return eligible items to designated drop-off points, such as retail stores, recycling centers, or special collection events. The collected items are then processed, either for recycling into new products or for safe disposal. These programs contribute to a circular economy by keeping resources in use for longer periods.
