Takaisinotonestäjät, often translated as reuptake inhibitors, are a class of drugs that affect the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain. They primarily work by blocking the reabsorption, or reuptake, of neurotransmitters from the synaptic cleft back into the presynaptic neuron. This process leads to a higher concentration of neurotransmitters in the synapse, which can enhance their signaling to the postsynaptic neuron.

The most well-known category of reuptake inhibitors includes selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are widely prescribed for treating depression and anxiety disorders. By increasing serotonin levels, SSRIs are thought to improve mood and reduce symptoms of these conditions. Other types of reuptake inhibitors target different neurotransmitters. For example, norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs) affect both norepinephrine and dopamine, and are sometimes used for depression or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) block the reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine, and are also used for depression and other mood disorders.

The effectiveness and side effects of reuptake inhibitors can vary depending on the specific drug, the neurotransmitter it targets, and the individual patient. While generally considered safe and effective for many, they can sometimes cause side effects such as nausea, insomnia, or sexual dysfunction. Their development and use have significantly impacted the treatment of various neurological and psychiatric conditions.
