Taiyuan

Taiyuan is the capital of Shanxi Province in northern China. It is located in the central part of the province, on the banks of the Fen River at the foothills of the Taiyue Mountains. As the provincial capital, Taiyuan serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of Shanxi and administers several districts within its prefecture.

Historically, Taiyuan has been a regional center since ancient times, with settlements dating back to early Chinese dynasties. It developed as a strategic location along northern trade routes and grew significantly in the modern era through coal mining and metallurgical industries. In recent decades the city has diversified into manufacturing, logistics, services, and other sectors, while remaining a focal point of Shanxi’s energy-intensive economy. Taiyuan is home to several higher education institutions and research centers.

Cultural and tourist sites include the Jinci Temple complex located near the city, the Shanxi Museum, and historic streets in the old town. The city also features parks and riverfront areas along the Fen River. Taiyuan is served by Taiyuan Wusu International Airport and is connected by rail and highway networks to Beijing, Inner Mongolia, and other parts of northern China.
