Taivutuslajit
Taivutuslajit (inflection classes) refer to the traditional classification of Finnish nouns according to their inflection patterns. Each taivutuslaji defines how a noun changes form across the cases and possessive forms. The classification depends on the nominative singular ending, the stem type, and phonological properties such as vowel harmony and consonant gradation. The most commonly taught system divides nouns into several main taivutuslajit (often labelled I–VI in grammars).
