Taenianotus

Taenianotus is a genus of scorpionfish belonging to the family Scorpaenidae. The genus currently contains two recognized species: Taenianotus triacanthus and Taenianotus marginatus. These fish are found in the Indo-Pacific region.

Taenianotus triacanthus, commonly known as the Leaf Scorpionfish or Paperfish, is the most widespread species. It is characterized by its flattened body and ornate dermal appendages that mimic algae or seaweed, providing excellent camouflage. They can vary significantly in color, ranging from red and pink to brown and yellow, often matching their immediate surroundings. These fish are typically solitary and inhabit coral reefs and rocky outcrops, often remaining motionless for extended periods.

Taenianotus marginatus, the Marginate Scorpionfish, is a less commonly encountered species. It shares the flattened body morphology and camouflage capabilities of its congener but may exhibit distinct color patterns or fin ray counts depending on the taxonomic interpretation. Like other scorpionfish, Taenianotus species possess venomous spines in their dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins, which they use for defense. They are carnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans and fish, which they ambush using their remarkable camouflage.
