Tabulaatorit

Tabulaatorit, known in English as tabulators, were electro-mechanical machines used for processing data. They played a crucial role in the early development of computing and data analysis, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The most famous tabulator was developed by Herman Hollerith for the 1890 U.S. Census. These machines read information encoded on punched cards. Each card represented a record, and holes punched in specific positions on the card corresponded to different data categories, such as age, occupation, or location. The tabulator's mechanism would sense the presence or absence of holes and then tally or sort the data accordingly. This dramatically sped up the process of analyzing large datasets compared to manual methods. Tabulators were used for a variety of tasks beyond census work, including accounting, inventory management, and statistical analysis in businesses and government agencies. They were precursors to modern computers, introducing the concept of automated data processing and laying the groundwork for the digital age.
