Taalam
Taalam is a fundamental concept in Carnatic music, referring to the rhythmic cycle or metric pattern. It is the temporal framework upon which melodies are composed and performed. A taalam is characterized by a specific number of beats and a sequence of stresses and non-stresses, often represented by hand gestures. These gestures, known as angas, are combined in various ways to form different talas. The primary angas are the laghu (a count of beats), drutam (a two-beat unit with a stress and a non-stress), and anudrutam (a single beat).
