TVE

TVE, or Televisión Española, is the television division of Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE), the Spanish public-service broadcaster. It operates as a state-owned public broadcaster and serves as the primary source of general‑interest television in Spain. TVE's remit includes informing, educating and entertaining, with a focus on civic programming, cultural content and news.

TVE's main channels are La 1 and La 2. La 1 offers general programming including news, drama, and entertainment; La 2 focuses on cultural, factual and children's content. The network also operates thematic channels and online services such as Clan for children and Teledeporte for sports, alongside digital platforms for streaming and on-demand content through RTVE Play (rtve.es).

News is a central element, with daily Telediario newscasts in multiple editions. Public-service programming covers national and regional matters, documentaries, and cultural programming, including music and performing arts, as well as co-produced international content.

RTVE is funded primarily through public funds but maintains a limited role for advertising under the applicable media laws. Editorial independence is a stated principle, with governance overseen by a public oversight framework and a board appointed by the state.

In the digital era, TVE has expanded online access via RTVE Play, offering live streams and on-demand access to news, series, and documentaries. It faces ongoing challenges related to funding, digital transformation and editorial balance, as part of RTVE’s broader mission to provide universal public broadcasting in Spain.
