A short arc generally provides better control and penetration, while a longer arc can lead to a wider bead and increased heat input, which may be undesirable in certain situations. Filler material, typically added in the form of a rod, requires careful feeding into the weld puddle. Techniques vary depending on the joint design and desired bead profile. Some welders dip the filler rod directly into the puddle, while others feed it from the side, ensuring it melts off smoothly without contaminating the tungsten electrode.

Control of the welding current is crucial. A consistent amperage is necessary for stable arc formation and proper melting of the base metal and filler. Changes in current may be required for different materials, thicknesses, and welding positions. Argon is the most common shielding gas used in TIG welding to protect the tungsten electrode and the molten weld puddle from atmospheric contamination. The gas flow rate must be adequate but not excessive, as too much gas can cause turbulence and pull in contaminants.
