TEÁOR

TEÁOR, short for Tevékenységek Osztályozási Rendszere, is the Hungarian statistical classification of economic activities. It provides a standardized coding system to categorize economic units—such as enterprises and organizations—by their main activity. The system is designed to support statistical production, administration, and policy analysis by enabling consistent reporting and comparison over time and with other countries.

TEÁOR is harmonized with the European Union’s NACE Rev. 2 classification, which allows Hungary’s economic statistics to be compatible with EU data and international comparisons. The Hungarian Central Statistical Office (Központi Statisztikai Hivatal, KSH) maintains and updates TEÁOR, ensuring that revisions reflect changes in the economy and EU classifications. The codes typically follow a hierarchical structure with multiple levels, enabling data aggregation from detailed activity classes to broader sectors.

In daily use, TEÁOR codes appear in business registrations, statistical surveys, national accounts, tax filings, and public procurement processes. They identify the primary activity of a business for reporting purposes and data analysis. The system supports economic analysis, regional planning, and policy evaluation by allowing consistent breakdowns of economic output, employment, and other indicators by activity.

TEÁOR is periodically revised to reflect evolving economic activities and to maintain alignment with NACE updates. As such, it serves as the standard Hungarian reference for classifying economic activities in official statistics and administration.
