TEWLmålinger, short for Trans epidermal Water Loss measurements, is a non-invasive technique used to assess the integrity of the skin barrier. This method quantifies the amount of water that evaporates from the skin's surface. A healthy skin barrier effectively retains moisture, leading to low TEWL values. Conversely, a compromised skin barrier, often due to conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or environmental factors, allows for increased water loss, resulting in higher TEWL readings.

The measurement is typically performed using a specialized device called a Tewameter. This instrument is placed directly onto the skin's surface, and it measures the water vapor gradient. The readings are usually expressed in grams per square meter per hour (g/m²/h). TEWLmålinger are valuable in dermatology for diagnosing skin conditions, monitoring treatment efficacy, and evaluating the effects of cosmetic or pharmaceutical products on skin hydration and barrier function.
