TEIannotated

TEIannotated is a term used in digital humanities to describe TEI-encoded texts that include explicit, machine-readable annotations beyond the primary transcription. In TEI projects, annotations may document editorial decisions, linguistic features, named entities, or analytical observations, and are embedded within the TEI document using standard elements and attributes. A TEIannotated file typically carries a stable identification of the base text and may include an annotation layer that references the base text through pointers or IDs.

Encoding practices for TEIannotated rely on the TEI Guidelines. Editors often employ modules such as notes and apparatus for editorial commentary, and use structures like note, app, and seg to mark annotations and variants. Annotations can be layered, for example a linguistic layer with part-of-speech and lemma information, and a scholarly layer with glosses or interpretive notes. Projects may customize the TEI schema using TEI ODD (One Document Does) to reflect annotation schemas while maintaining interoperability.

Validation and distribution: TEIannotated documents are commonly serialized in TEI-XML, validated against TEI schemas or Relax NG, and published via standard digital edition pipelines or TEI-aware publishing tools. Interoperability is supported by TEI's linking mechanisms, enabling annotations to be aligned with the original text, quotations, or external resources.
