TBTCl

Tributyltin chloride, commonly abbreviated as TBTCl, is an organotin compound with the formula (C4H9)3SnCl. It is a reactive, moisture-sensitive liquid that hydrolyzes in water to tin oxides and hydrochloric acid. As a tri-substituted tin chloride, TBTCl is part of a class of organotin chemicals known for potent biocidal properties.

Historically, TBTCl was used as a biocide in antifouling coatings for ships, where it helped prevent the growth of marine organisms on hulls. It has also seen use as a wood preservative and in other industrial applications, though its use has declined due to environmental concerns.

Environmental and health considerations drive its regulation. Tributyltin compounds are highly toxic to aquatic organisms and can cause severe reproductive and developmental effects. In marine ecosystems, TBT has been linked to imposex in certain mollusks, a condition that affects reproductive anatomy. The compound is persistent in sediments and can accumulate in the food chain. International and national regulations have phased out or banned the use of TBT in antifouling paints, and the substance is typically subject to strict handling and disposal requirements.
