T7SS1

T7SS1, also known as Type VII secretion system 1, is a multi-protein complex found in various bacteria, particularly prevalent in mycobacteria like Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This secretion system is crucial for the transport of effector proteins across the bacterial cell envelope, which consists of a complex lipid-rich outer membrane. The T7SS1 is distinct from other secretion systems due to its unique structure and function, enabling the translocation of specific substrates, often involved in host-pathogen interactions.

The T7SS1 machinery is composed of several core components, including transmembrane proteins, membrane proteins, and ATPases. These components assemble into a functional pore or channel that facilitates the passage of secreted substrates. The precise mechanism of substrate recognition and translocation is still an active area of research, but it is understood to be an energy-dependent process, utilizing ATP hydrolysis for propulsion.
