Tümpanikavitus

Tümpanikavitus, also known as tympanitis or otitis media, is an inflammation of the middle ear. This condition is common, particularly in children, and can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Often, it follows an upper respiratory infection such as the common cold, where the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, becomes blocked and inflamed. This blockage prevents normal drainage and air pressure regulation in the middle ear, creating an environment where fluid can build up and become infected.

Symptoms of tümpanikavitus can vary but commonly include ear pain, a feeling of fullness in the ear, and temporary hearing loss. In young children, who may not be able to articulate their discomfort, symptoms can manifest as irritability, difficulty sleeping, and tugging at the ear. Fever may also be present. Diagnosis is typically made by a healthcare professional through a visual examination of the eardrum using an otoscope.

Treatment for tümpanikavitus depends on the severity and cause. For mild cases, especially those suspected to be viral, watchful waiting and pain management with over-the-counter medications might be recommended. Antibiotics are usually prescribed for bacterial infections. In some recurrent or persistent cases, a doctor might recommend the insertion of ear tubes (tympanostomy tubes) to help ventilate the middle ear and prevent fluid buildup.
