Tõestusviis

Tõestusviis refers to a method of proof used in mathematics and logic. It is a systematic procedure to establish the truth of a statement or proposition based on a set of axioms, definitions, and previously proven theorems. The goal of a tõestusviis is to provide a rigorous and irrefutable argument that leaves no room for doubt regarding the validity of the conclusion.

There are several common tõestusviisid. One fundamental method is direct proof, where the conclusion is derived directly from the premises through a sequence of logical steps. Another is proof by contradiction, also known as indirect proof, which assumes the negation of the statement to be proven and then shows that this assumption leads to a logical inconsistency, thereby establishing the truth of the original statement.

Mathematical induction is a powerful tõestusviis used to prove statements about natural numbers. It involves showing that a statement holds for a base case (usually the first natural number) and then demonstrating that if the statement holds for an arbitrary natural number, it also holds for the next one.

Proof by contrapositive is another valid tõestusviis. It involves proving the contrapositive of a statement, which is logically equivalent to the original statement. The contrapositive of "if P, then Q" is "if not Q, then not P."

The choice of tõestusviis often depends on the nature of the statement being proven and the available tools and knowledge. A well-constructed tõestusviis is clear, logical, and complete, allowing others to follow the reasoning and verify its correctness. These methods are crucial for building the edifice of mathematical knowledge and ensuring its consistency and reliability.
