Tähtienmuodostus, or star formation, is the process by which dense regions within molecular clouds in interstellar space, sometimes referred to as "stellar nurseries" or "star-forming regions," collapse and form stars. This process begins when a molecular cloud, primarily composed of molecular hydrogen, begins to condense under the influence of gravity. As the cloud collapses, it fragments into smaller clumps, each of which can potentially form a star or a star system.

The collapse is driven by the gravitational attraction between particles within the cloud. As the cloud contracts, it heats up due to the conversion of gravitational potential energy into thermal energy. This heating causes the cloud to become opaque to its own radiation, leading to a further increase in temperature and pressure. The central region of the collapsing cloud becomes denser and hotter, eventually reaching temperatures and pressures high enough to initiate nuclear fusion, marking the birth of a star.
