Süsinikahelad

Süsinikahelad are a type of dye that is traditionally used in Estonian folk tinsmithing. The term "süsinikahelad" roughly translates to "sugar dyes" in English, which is a reference to the fact that they are derived from plant-based materials.

Süsinikahelad are typically made from a combination of plants, such as indigo, weld, and madder roots. These plants contain pigments that can be extracted and used to create a range of colors, from deep blues to vibrant yellows and reds. To create the dye, the plants are usually boiled in water to release their pigment content, which is then mixed with other substances to create the desired color and consistency.

Süsinikahelad have been used for centuries in Estonian folk tinsmithing to decorate tin objects, such as buckles, buttons, and other ornaments. The dyes are applied to the metal using a process called wax-resist dyeing, where a wax resist agent is applied to the metal to protect it from the dye. The metal is then immersed in the dye bath to create the desired color pattern.

Süsinikahelad are still used today by some artisans and craftspeople in Estonia and other countries to create traditional and contemporary designs. However, the use of these dyes is largely seen as a nostalgic practice, as modern synthetic dyes have become widely available and are often preferred due to their ease of use and consistent color results.
