Sõmeru

Sõmeru is an administrative village in Tallinn, Estonia. Located in the Hiiumaa Rural Municipality, the area is approximately 78 square kilometers in size. At the end of 2011, the population of the village was 2,311.

The area was formed as a result of the merger between the former municipalities of Noarootsi Parish and Odalina Parish. Sõmeru was officially incorporated on June 1, 2013, as part of the reorganization of local governments in Estonia.

Early history of the area is not well-documented. Local archaeological excavations have revealed signs of human presence in the region dating back to the Mesolithic period. The area witnessed numerous ritual practices and human burials of that era.

The climate of Sõmeru is classified as temperate maritime, like much of Estonia. Temperatures vary little between winter and summer, but seasonal changes are noticeable. Winters tend to be mild, with average temperatures around 0°C. Summer temperatures range between 15°C to 25°C.

Notable geographic features of the region include Haeska Bay, Suur Neutral Swamp, and elevated grounds such as Tiiaru and Maaspere. Area is largely forested with pine, downy birch, and other deciduous tree species. Agriculture plays a significant role in the economy of Sõmeru village, making up a substantial portion of its skilled workforce.
