Sõidueksam

Sõidueksam is the driving examination required to obtain a driver's license in Estonia. It consists of two parts: theory (teooriaeksam) and practical driving test (praktikaeksam). The examination is administered by the national transport authority, currently Transpordiamet (formerly Maanteeamet).

Applicants must meet basic prerequisites before taking the tests. These typically include minimum age for the license category, medical fitness, and a vision test. Most applicants prepare with a licensed driving school and obtain a learner’s permit as part of the process.

The theory exam tests knowledge of traffic rules, road signs, and safe driving practices. It is a multiple-choice test offered in several languages, and a passing score is required to proceed to the practical test. Retakes are allowed with waiting periods.

The practical exam assesses driving ability on public roads and in a controlled testing area. Candidates must demonstrate vehicle control, situational awareness, proper signaling, adherence to traffic laws, and required maneuvers such as parking and turning. Examiners evaluate performance and provide a pass/fail decision. The test can be taken using a vehicle supplied by a driving school or a privately owned car that meets safety requirements.

After passing both parts, the applicant may receive the license for the appropriate category (for example, category B for cars). The process involves fees, scheduling considerations, and regional variability in waiting times. Renewal and ongoing compliance with traffic regulations are required to maintain the license.
