Sószórást

Sószórást, which translates to "salt spreading" in English, is a common practice primarily undertaken for road maintenance and safety during winter months. Its purpose is to prevent ice formation or melt existing ice and snow on roadways. This is achieved by applying salt, typically sodium chloride, to the road surface.

The process involves specialized vehicles equipped with spreaders that distribute the salt. These vehicles often operate before, during, or immediately after snowfall or icy conditions. The salt works by lowering the freezing point of water. When salt dissolves in water, it creates a brine solution with a lower freezing point than pure water. This prevents water from freezing into ice, or it causes existing ice to melt.

While effective, sószórást has environmental considerations. The salt can runoff into soil and water bodies, potentially harming vegetation and aquatic life. It can also contribute to the corrosion of vehicles and infrastructure. Therefore, there is ongoing research and development into alternative de-icing agents and more efficient application methods to mitigate these environmental impacts. Different types of salts, such as calcium chloride or magnesium chloride, are also used, sometimes in combination with sodium chloride, as they can be effective at lower temperatures.
